The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has five Departments under it as under:
Shri Rajnath Singh , Defence Minister (Raksha Mantri – RM) and Shri Sanjay Seth, Minister of State in the Ministry of Defence (Raksha Rajya Mantri – RRM) are the Ministers-in-charge of the Ministry of Defence.
The Department of Defence Production is headed by Secretary (Defence Production). He is assisted by an Additional Secretary, Five Joint Secretaries and one Principal Adviser (Cost). Below them are Directors, Deputy Secretaries, Under Secretaries and Section Officers.

The Department of Defence Production was set up in November 1962 with the objective of developing a comprehensive production infrastructure for the defence of the nation.Over the years, the Department has established wide ranging production facilities for various defence equipment through the Ordnance Factories (OFs) and Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs). The Department also encourages the private sector in the manufacture of Defence equipment.The products manufactured by OFs and DPSUs include arms and ammunition, tanks, armoured vehicles, heavy vehicles, fighter aircraft and helicopters, warships, submarines, missiles, ammunition, electronic equipment, earth moving equipment, special alloys and special purpose steels.

Section 4(1)(b)(ii) the powers and duties of its officers and employees;
The officers and employees of the Department of Defence Production are generally governed by the provisions of the Constitution of India, the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, the Government of India (Transaction of Business) Rules, Instructions issued by various Nodal Ministries/Departments (e.g. the Cabinet Secretariat, Ministry of Personnel, Ministry of Finance, Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Lok Sabha Secretariat, Rajya Sabha Secretariat etc.), Manual of Office Procedure, powers delegated at each level under various Rules and Regulations, Orders delegated by the Ministry of Defence, Departmental instructions, Security Instructions issued by the Ministry etc.

The papers, documents and files in the Ministry are handled at different levels of hierarchy in the Ministry as per the requirements of the Constitution of India, the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961, the Government of India (Transaction of Business) Rules, 1961, Security Instructions issued by the Ministry, the Manual of Office Procedure, Parliamentary Procedures, General Financial Rules, Delegation of Financial Rules, Fundamental Rules, Supplementary Rules and other Service Rules, Instructions/Guidelines issued by various Nodal Ministries (like the Cabinet Secretariat, Department of Personnel & Training, Ministry of Finance, Department of Public Enterprises etc., and other Departmental instructions issued from time to time.

The work allocated to the Department relates mainly to production of Defence equipment, policy matters relating to defence production and the defence PSUs and Ordnance Factories. The Department does not have much direct dealing with the public.

The general public/citizens can come to the Department located at South Block or Sena Bhawan in New Delhi through the Reception Offices and meet officers who are entitled to meet visitors on any working day between 9.00 AM to 5.30 PM, preferably after prior appointment, so that they can meet them when they are free from other urgent work, meetings or engagements.The Library of the Department is not open to the general public.
